A sheriff's spokeswoman said that none of the four is suspected of directly helping Robert Casillas and another inmate escape from Cook County Jail Aug. 21. But among the allegations is that the sergeant doctored a log book to cover up the fact he improperly placed Casillas on a jail work crew, reserved for inmates accused of non-violent crimes. Casillas, 31, was awaiting trial for the Feb. 24, 1989, murder of a couple in their Far North Side jewelry store when he escaped with a second inmate, James Halloran, by climbing an electrical conduit pipe, then jumping off the roof of the jail. Halloran was immediately captured. But Casillas remained at large for a month before he was tracked down in a Houston suburb. He was returned to Chicago Wednesday where he faces a new charge of escape. He is also awaiting a retrial for the 1991 fatal shooting of a rival gang member. ................... ------------------------ COPYRIGHT - CHICAGO TRIBUNE This excerpt was obtained from the Chicago Tribune's archives in the Newstand section of AMERICA ONLINE (aol.com).
