The following are the ASC's Critical Criminology Division award winners for 1997 by the five member awards committee. The plaques will be given at the Critical Criminology social session on Thursday, November 20, about 9:15. ================================================================ MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Signifying singular contributions to the development of critical criminology scholarship or pedagogy over time; or, contributions of an exceptional recent accomplishment (major scholarship or something exceptionally innovative). CLAIRE RENZETTI Department of Sociology St. Joseph's University Philadelphia (19131) Professor Renzetti, a 1996 Fulbright Scholar, has been active in addressing the problem of hate crimes and violence against women for the past two decades. Her books and articles reflect nearly two decades of scholarship intended guide policy and social action. She is editor of the journal VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, and author of the path-breaking book VIOLENT BETRAYAL: PARTNER ABUSE IN LESBIAN RELATIONSHIPS. She has also been active in the National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CRITICAL CRIMINOLOGIST OF THE YEAR AWARD: Recognizing a scholar who has symbolized the spirit of the Division in some combination of scholarship, teaching, and/or service within the past year: MICHAEL RADELET Department of Sociology University of Florida Gainesville, FL 32611 Professor Radelet has been an aggressive opponent of capital punishment for several decades. His four major articles on deterrence and wrongful deaths in the past year, combined with his work in the trenches in opposing the death penalty in Florida and working with families of the condemned, have established him as one of the premier experts on (and opponents of) capital punishment in the U.S. Professor Radelet also has given the Division considerable visibility by making selected papers available on the Critical Criminology homepage.
